Even after a decade of construction and £369 million of taxpayer money poured into its walls, the King has opted for the familiar comfort of Clarence House. The “Museumification” of the Crown
The official line from the palace is one of progress and public service. By keeping the residence off-limits to his private life, the King is effectively turning the building into a “national heritage site” rather than a home. It is a clever PR move, designed to deflect criticism over the exorbitant cost of the renovations.
But beneath the surface, it feels like the end of an era. Buckingham Palace was never just a building; it was a symbol of the sovereign’s presence. There is an undeniable irony here. We, the public, have demanded transparency, fiscal responsibility, and a “slimmed-down” monarchy. The King has given us exactly that. He has disclosed his taxes, he has opened the books, and he has essentially “donated” his official residence to the public interest.
